Summary/Abstract: As several contemporary studies show, graphic cartoons are a powerful tool for sociopolitical criticism and one of the most peculiar, complex, and atypical opinion resources. This article deals with the use of phraseological units (PhUs) in current Spanish press cartoons published between 2015 and 2022 and its aim is twofold. On the one hand, it attempts to demonstrate how fixed word combinations with different degrees of fixation and idiomaticity are visualized, that is, are represented either verbally or iconically in this textual genre, and, on the other, it pretends to determine the value of contextual elements in the creation and comprehension of phraseological meaning. In other words, a typology of the PhUs used, either implicitly or explicitly, in the sociopolitical cartoons will be offered and the role of the iconic, linguistic and sociocultural component in the reader’s interpretation of the phraseological meaning, both lexicalized (conventional) and manipulated (non-conventional), that is, inferred in the press cartoon’s context, will be highlighted.
