Summary/Abstract: This article analyses the instances of the genitive absolute and related syntactic constructions in the Iliad and the Odyssey. Firstly, relying on the material found in the two Homeric epics, the earliest literary monuments of Greek language, the author offers a description of the stages in the development of the syntactic construction of the genitive absolute, which gradually changed before assuming its standard form. Second, the author analyses numerous examples of the genitive absolute in two classical Serbo-Croatian translations of the Homeric epics and discusses and compares various possibilities of transferring these constructions from Ancient Greek into Serbo-Croatian. Homeric examples of the syntactic structure are classified into two groups: ‘Borderline cases’ and (proper) ‘Absolute Genitives’. Within the second group, further classifications are presented, according to function and meaning of the examples of the genitive absolute. ‘Borderline cases’, which actually reflect the initial phase in the emergence of the syntactic construction, are in the focus of a detailed philological analysis. In the final chapter, the observations made about Serbo-Croatian translations in previous chapters are summarized andexplained.
