Summary/Abstract: The paper refers to the data gathereed durint the field research in the Kumanovo region from the period of 1987 and 1989-1990, and according to the published literature for the national costume from this area. The author has percieved three phases in the development of the costume: 1. The period from the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 1st World War 2. The period between the two World Wars 3.The period after the Hnd World War The dressing elements from the eldest periods are made from natural fibres: wool, cotton, flax, hemp and leather. The costume during the period between the two World Wars is under the influence of the city wear, as well as the national costume from Šumadija, but preserving numerous local features. After the second World War the process of transformation of the national costume is intensive, resulting in a entirely new type of costume from the former.
