Summary/Abstract: A complex personality of Romanian criticism and essayism, placed under the seal of multiple hypostases and perceived by literary critics in terms of opposition, Paul Zarifopol did not only represent the effervescent spirit of the time, entirely devoted to the pen, but he brought the whole example of a life lived outside the spotlight, with trials and hardships, but which has raised itself by its intrinsic strength, by the model of courage and confidence that it inspires. He devoted his whole life to writing, he was appreciated and criticized alike, but what has remained in his pages with the passage of time is precisely the verve and enthusiasm with which he crafted his creations, making each letter vibrate to his own rhythm. The lifespan of his texts is prolonged by the passion with which he wrote, by his iconoclastic spirit sometimes pushed to extremes, by the erudition he conveyed in every sentence and by the authenticity of the ideas he projected in polemical games, stirring his opponents into real literary battles, ending in sparkling and savory dialogues.
