Summary/Abstract: This article examines a tetralogy about the Swedish emigration to North America during the second half of the 19th century, written by Vilhelm Moberg. The tetralogy consists of the following volumes: "The Emigrants", "Unto a Good Land", "The Settlers", and "The Last Letter Home" (only the first two, "The Emigrants" and "Unto a Good Land" have been published in Polish). I present the lives of the fictional characters that are in Moberg's tetralogy. Due to the repetitive historical references about the Swedish emigration to North America in the 19th century, I also present the lives of some of the real emigrants. Moreover, I describe Moberg's personal life, his development as a writer and journalist, his involvement in politics, and how he discovered the diaries of Andrew Peterson, a Swedish emigrant. His diaries became very crucial for Moberg while he was working on the tetralogy. Finally, this article tries to demonstrate how important these novels are in Swedish literature and culture.
