Summary/Abstract: The ancient settlement of Ampelum situated in the valley of Ampoi river, was the administrative centre for the mining area from Apuseni Mountains. Its location contributed to the economical prosperity needed for being later municipium. The twelve years of Marcomanic Wars affected seriosly the demographz in the area, hoards of barbarians plundered an forced the Romans to close the mines. In 180 the Emperor Commodus ended the conflict with the northern tribes and restored the economical activities in Ampelum. Two inscriptions certify this deed. In both of them is a man called Ulpius Maximus, whose town activity encourages the gold minning from Apuseni Mountains. One of the inscriptions is dedicated to the victory of Commodus, probably against the Germanic tribes and it has got an close analogy in Dacia, at Porolissum where the emperor is called restitutor commerciorum.
