Summary/Abstract: Lecturers who teach German as a foreign language at universities around the world through the German Academic Exchange Service (hereafter DAAD) and the Austrian Agency for Education and Internationalisation (hereafter OeAD) encounter students who sometimes have different cultural patterns of interpretation, which can lead to irritations in the classroom. This article is an attempt to deal with these irritations systematically. For this purpose, results of a data collection are presented, within which OeAD and DAAD lecturers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia were interviewed by means of an online questionnaire and students in a focus group interview. Both groups responded to the questions of whether they had experienced irritating teaching situations and how these had proceeded and been negotiated. Subsequently, both the teachers and the students stated how they would like to deal constructively with such situations in the future.
