Summary/Abstract: The phonetic system of the Võru dialect includes an affricate that is absent from most Estonian dialects. The article deals with durations of /ts/, component relations, and the rising period of the amplitude in comparison with /s/ in Standard Estonian. Researchers have claimed mainly on the basis of English that affricates and consonant clusters could be differentiated by frication noise of the rising period of the amplitude. Also, researchers have pointed out differences in the relations of the closure and frication components, but measurements by various authors have shown different regularities. The analysis of /ts/ in eight speakers of the Võru dialect and six speakers of Standard Estonian shows that the affricate is definitely present in Q1 words because a consonant cluster cannot occur in this context. /ts/ in Q2 and Q3 words, word-initially, and word-finally revealed some differences between the closure and frication relations, but in the Võru material these relation were not the same in all the speakers. The rising period of the frication amplitude did not reveal any important differences between the affricates in Võru and consonant clusters in the standard language; however, in all the cases it was much shorter in /ts/ than in the fricative /s/.
