Summary/Abstract: The article deals with a segment of the cultural transfer that took place betweenPolish and South African poetry in the 1980s and 1990s. The analysis of the interactionsbetween the actors and texts involved in this process allows for the identification of thestakes of the alliances formed between them, as well as the mutual projections and/ormisunderstandings. The research focuses on interpretations of Zbigniew Herbert’s poetryby Stephen Watson, a South African poet and essayist working on a model of poetrythat would support the post-totalitarian transition of his national community. Througha close reading of Watson’s texts, set within the broader context of the global receptionof the so-called Polish school of poetry, the ideas activated in South African culture asa result of the transnational relationship with Poland will be identified and discussed.
