Summary/Abstract: The article examines the uses of the term cinematic photography from the 1980s to the present day, highlighting three main aspects used in specialized theoretical literature and common popular texts. These are: the dramaturgical model and practices of film production characteristic for narrative staged photographs resembling tableau vivant; specific practices in the editing process characteristic for conceptual photographs relaying to subtle references; and general visual style common for photographers from various backgrounds. The analysis goes through key photographers in these directions to bring out the relevance of the term and discusses the necessity to be further clarified by explanations. In conclusion, the article leaves an open question for the perspectives of cinematographic photography, which may end in popular and non-specific uses, similar to the contemporary uses of art photography.
