Summary/Abstract: The problems of Ottoman slavery in the Bulgarian lands at the time of the Eastern Crisis of 1875.1878 and the following years are studied. It analyzes the situation in the empire at the time, the continuing pressure for the abolition of slavery and slave trade and the multitude of factors that oppose it. It studies the constitutional and legal frame of the abolition in the Bulgarian Principality and the autonomous province of Eastern Roumelia, along with cases of court practice and the attempts organized by individuals and the Bulgarian Exarchate for rescuing Bulgarians sold as slaves.
