Summary/Abstract: The article presents a new view on the progressiveness in contemporary art – a work could bear progressive signs and still be connected to the use of historicity. The works of four artists from different backgrounds, personal stylistics and art movements are examined: The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind for clarinet and string quartet by the Argentinian composer with Jewish ancestry Osvaldo Golijov; the solo piano work Baroque Style Triptych by the Bulgarian composer Yordan Goshev; the famous silent work 4’33” by the American post-war avant-garde composer John Cage; and the Italian painter Piero Manzoni’s sculpture The Base of the World. The study distinguishes four different approaches to the relation time–eternity in the works examined and divides them into two categories: practical and conceptual. The authors’ pursuit to go beyond time limits is coherent to the aspiration for reaching the eternity and is in close connection to the philosophy of art – thus making the works bearers of ideas transcending time and space.
