Summary/Abstract: The article presents the current research areas of the Bukovina Institute in Augsburg and the main directions for the development of scientific activities undertaken by its members. The author, who took over the leadership of the institute in 2023, starts from the idea the history of Bukovina is often referred to as a “miniature Europe” due to its diversity of nationalities and religions during the long 19th century. This history fostered the “Chernivtsi myth” and the concept of the homo bucovinensis. The Bukovina Institute in Augsburg, founded in 1988 and connected to the Bukovinian German community, has expanded its focus since becoming affiliated with the University of Augsburg in 2003. The institute now emphasizes transnational history and interdisciplinary collaboration, enhanced by new professorships and staff expansions. Current projects include preserving Jewish memory, studying Bukovinaʼs psychiatric history in an interregional context, and digitizing archival materials to improve accessibility. The institute aims to promote a multiperspectival history of Bukovina through international cooperation and digital humanities.
