Summary/Abstract: The circular economy enables production and consumption that requires the reuse of products and materials in such a way that they are repaired, renewed, and recycled. Waste management in the circular economy takes on a completely new dimension. Smart and planned waste management becomes a fundamental factor of a sustainable economy as the only possible one - one that does not lead to the depletion of resources. The task of the circular economy is to separate economic growth from the generation of municipal waste. By this, in this paper, using the methods of correlation and regression analysis, the strength of the connection will be investigated and the analytical relationship between the gross domestic product and the generation of municipal waste in the Republic of Croatia will be presented. The main aim of this paper is to point out the advantages offered by the circular economy model and to promote the idea that waste is viewed as a resource. The main finding of this paper indicates a statistically positive and strong relationship between GDP growth in the Republic of Croatia and the generation of municipal waste. The findings indicate the necessity of increasing the recycling rate of municipal waste in order to achieve the set value of 55% by 2030.
