THE LANGUAGE OF THE PANDEMIC: REFLECTIONS OF COVID-19 ON THE LEXICON OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE.

Summary/Abstract: Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Italian language students in Serbia, as well as their counterparts in other countries, have been faced with a long list of new words. We refer not only to the meaning given to words that were already present in the Italian vocabulary, but also to neologisms, medical terms and anglicisms that very quickly entered our everyday life and that, by the nature of things, should not be bypassed in teaching. Having in mind the urgent need of students of Italian in Serbia to face current language challenges, in this paper we have analyzed the most frequent terms that have appeared, along with Covid-19, on television, radio, electronic and print media, as well as in dictionaries and books during 2020 and 2021. As there is a fear among Italian linguists that the current language phase, which reflects social insecurities, will eventually worsen the quality of the Italian language, in this paper we give our opinion on the growing influence of anglicisms and the potential emergence of a new anti-language: if it is legitimate to express concern about the infodemic which, among other things, has befallen Italy, it is questionable whether the deterioration of expressive possibilities can be attributed to the pandemic or has already been considerable in recent decades.
