Summary/Abstract: Bulgaria and the European Union are at an important energy crossroads. A key strategic goal of the EU is to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, as set out in the European Green Deal. The deal includes a series of initiatives to transform the economy into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive system. The key vision of the Green Deal is to have net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and economic growth to be independent of the use of natural resources. The proposals within the European Green Deal aim to prepare all sectors of the economy to achieve climate goals in a fair, cost-effective and competitive manner. These ambitious goals will lead to both positive and negative consequences on the technological processes of electricity production, which require careful planning and management. Failure to comply with the optimal criteria for balanced production by different technologies will inevitably have an adverse impact on the development of the Bulgarian electricity market. Some of these trends are discussed in this article.
