Summary/Abstract: The escalation of the conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia in August 2008 that led to a war between Georgia and Russia attracted the attention of the world. Caucasian republic has been struggling with unresolved conflicts since the dissolution of Soviet Union. Separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia have been trying to achieve independence from Georgia. Unresolved conflicts in the region are destabilizing the region. The region is of a strategic importance for the global players as well mainly due to its endowment with natural resources. Therefore, it is inevitable to identify the source of potential conflicts, its main parties and possible solutions to avoid future escalation.
