Summary/Abstract: Mainstream, American psychology emphasizes theoretical and methodologicaluniversalism, treating cultural differences as noise that impedes an objective take ofreality. Such an approach precludes an accurate description and understanding of localmanifestations of psychological functioning of a person understood as a culturallyembedded subject. This article considers assumptions of indigeneous psychologyas a proposal for solving the above problem. The text compares individual authors’perspectives, which results in a juxtaposition of epistemological approaches on theuniversalism–indigeneity continuum. The article assesses the degree of indigeneity in thecontext of ontology and epistemology: respectively the locality of the studied object orthe researcher’s perspective. The text considers the matter on the example of indigeneousthinking application to the history of psychological thought of pre-Christian Slavs.
