Summary/Abstract: The article explores relationships among place, knowing, and being in environmentalhistories. Grounding ourselves in the work of indigenous scholars from North Americaand the Pacific, we propose a method of listening and attuning that can attend to thedislocation and abstraction often found in work addressing ecocide and environmentalviolence. Against the ubiquity of the case-study approach, we propose a method we call“kin study,” which invites more embedded, expansive, material, and respectful relations topeople and lands. This article frames issues and then proposes – through a dialog – howkin studies may be constituted and applied in investigating environmental histories ofthe Pacific and Western Canada.
