Summary/Abstract: Despite of the big amount of literature on the International Brigades, only little can be found about the Romanian volunteers. This aspect is due to the fact that their number was quite low compared to the number of volunteers from other nations. Besides, the Romanian communist regime did not acknowledge them as heroes who had fought for peace and against fascism, but as traitors. The focus of the authors research work is to fill in this historical blank: Who were these 400 people? What were their motives for joining the International Brigades? The aim of the present study is to point out not only the motives and social dimensions of volunteering for the Spanish Civil War, but also the deeper implications for the volunteers’ life after this war.
