Summary/Abstract: The introduction presents basic elements of sociological research of professions in general, that is, especially in the sociology of mental disorders. Then, the main problems of sociology of psychiatric profession are analysed, as well as the place and role of psychiatrists, then mutual relations between professions in psychiatry, and relations between staff and patients. The attitudes towards the reputation of psychiatric profession in the society, public opinion towards psychiatrists, as well as a range of ethical issues related to the psychiatry are then presented. In the section on the sociology of psychotherapy, aspects of possible social context and ideology of psychotherapy are analysed (quietistic, activistic, populistic and others). Certain aspects of social role pf psychotherapists and sociotherapists and their position in the society are then presented. The conclusion states that the knowledge of sociology of psychiatry and related professions are a necessary elements of protection of increasingly jeopardised mental health of people.
