Summary/Abstract: Ukraine’s march towards independence began on 16 July 1990 when the parliament of the then Soviet republic passed a declaration of independence and abolished the primacy of Soviet over internal law. On 24 August, shortly after the collapse of a coup by hard-line communists in Moscow (19–21 August) independence was proclaimed by the Ukrainian parliament and on 1 December 1991 endorsed in a popular referendum. An asset possessed by Ukraine in seeking recognition of independence was that it had a diplomatic corps of ist own.
