Summary/Abstract: The aim of the exploration is to identify the external factors which contributed to the intensification of the European slave trade in the early Middle Ages. Eastern sources contain numerous testimonies about the rise of Eastern European slave trade in the period under review. The author believes that a stable demand for Eastern European slaves must be considered as one of the most important factors of Ancient Russian statehood development.
