THE SAAMI OF NORTHERN SCANDINAVIA

Summary/Abstract: On July 22, 2011 a car bomb exploded in central Oslo, the capital of Norway, killing eight persons and causing enormous damage to buildings mainly accommodating offices of the Norwegian government. This was followed little more than an hour later by a massacre of mainly young people, taking 69 lives, mostly teenagers. This massacre was carried out at a summer camp organised by the Norwegian Labour Party’s Youth Organisation at Utøya. This is a small island in a lake slightly less than 50 kilometres from central Oslo. First media comments attributed the bombing to Jihadists because of Norway’s participation in UN and Nato peace-keeping efforts in Afghanistan and in Libya.
