An Austrian report about the Banat from the year 1780

Summary/Abstract: The article presents an archival document, which is actually a report by the Austrian authorities from the second half of the 18th century on conditions in the Banat and the Banat military border. Both the content and the linguistic features of the report are examined. The demographic and economic situation of the Banat at that time forms the background for a further analysis: the image of the Other, in this case – the image of the Wallachian population. From a linguistic point of view, the text corresponds to the specific characteristics of 18th century administrative language: a certain randomness in spelling, extended sentence structures, Latin expressions, specific terminology. Another aim of the article is to show how much information archive documents can contain and how they can be used.
