Summary/Abstract: Development of the study programme Archival studies and documentology (2nd level Bologna degree / Master) is very essential because of the new and very much needed new knowledge, related to the problems of managing documentation. Slovenia and the wider region of central and southern Europe desperately needs a study programme Archival studies and documentology that support a different, more sustainable and responsible decision making, related to the above topic. This is crucial for the relationship, managing the archival and documentary business; and in any case, it would offer new knowledge with added value for a more professional work in the professional archives and other related services, as well as with creators of documentary material irrespective of document forms and methods. The new 2nd level Bologna degree “Archival studies and documentology” represents the knowledge, needed for handling the archival and documentary material in developments, starting with its origins, followed by usage, evaluation, safe-keeping and long-term storage in professional archival establishments. This knowledge is needed for the existence of different systems and processes, because those represent the basics for undisturbed management of documentation and longterm storage of archival material. Knowledge of archival studies and documentology enables understanding the work processes, related to creation of documentation and later on its monitoring (from creation, to forms, values, carriers, evaluation, storage deadlines, professional technical conditions, long-term storage, etc…) all up to the final storage of the archival material in the form of written heritage, stored in professional archives. The processes for handling documentation require new knowledge and professional decisions that must be in use for a longer period of time. There must be systems for decreasing and eliminating consequences of excess situations, natural disasters, floods, fire and negligent usage. People working in archives must be trained and skilled in order to handle the archival material with proper care and according to international standards, given that archival studies and documentology are modern, actual, dynamic and very interesting and useful activities / sciences. Given that we are talking about a study field that might have been less interesting in terms of education in the past, this study programme offers professional knowledge that will enable candidates proper and solid professional basis, needed for practical and research work. The post-graduate 2nd level study programme Archival studies and documentology, planned to be carried out at ALMA MATER EUROPAEA – European Centre Maribor, is scheduled to last 2 years (4 semesters) and it includes 120 ECTS credit points. It is an independent study segment that can be further continued with a PhD (3rd Bologna degree) in Archival studies and documentology, lasting 3 years and accounting to180 ECTS.
