Summary/Abstract: This article represents an attempt to examine the entire historical framework of the relation between Serbia and Europe. Begining with the diagnoses that most of the published material in the West in the last two decades about the politics in ex-Yugoslavia and Serbia often misinterprets events, the author underlines the most significant aspects of Serbian history from medieval times to the present, with a special focus on the aspect of realization of democracy and influence of both internal and external factors that contributed to it. The author concludes that Serbia’s relation with Europe resembles the relation of other East Europeans and that it is the understandable ambiva-lency of love and hate. The argument, however, is that for Serbs there is no alternative to the values of Western liberalism, but that Europe must also recognize its own shortcomings in regard to Serbian politics, culture and history.
