Criteria for the periodic evaluation of academic staff – selected issues

Summary/Abstract: The higher education reform and the associated new regulations keep the issue of periodic evaluation of academic staff relevant. The practice of conducting the first periodic appraisals based on the new regulation also confirms this. For example, doubts may arise about how to apply the principles for evaluating disciplines to the evaluation of academic teachers or heads of departments. The experience of US universities offers valuable insights into these matters. Attention should also focus on the system of academic staff evaluation by students, which raises many practical questions. The current legal regulations for evaluating academic teachers neither improve the state of science nor ensure its development as expected by society. They also fail to guarantee a high level of education for students and doctoral candidates.
