Summary/Abstract: The main material for the paper was private correspondence from the beginning of the 20th century, created in the enclave Croatian village of Chunovo, located in northern Burgenland (currently on the territory of Slovakia). The authors consider a cross-section of the vocabulary of a certain historical period, which opens up new opportunities for a diachronic linguistic description of texts of one epoch. The following methods are used: analytical observation of Germanisms in letters, linguistic interpretation of each case, comparison of the data obtained with other epistolary sources and data from South and West Slavic dialects of Slavic languages within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. About half of Germanisms form prefixed verbs and verbal nouns, while it is shown that the analysis of their graphic and word-formation variability demonstrates that borrowing was more often not phonetic, but orthographic. The frequency isolated use of the prefix according to the German model, in the adverbial function, was revealed. The paper identifies several groups of thematic borrowings: the most extensive are administrative and military terms, partly household vocabulary. Comparison with the data of other Slavic languages and dialects of the former Austria-Hungary shows the presence of numerous similarities, in particular, German borrowings from the sphere of designations of mental processes, expressive vocabulary, as well as the names of some everyday realities.
