Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the state of direct democracy in Hungary based on a historical and politico-constitutional study of the mechanisms of direct citizen participation, such as voting or referendum, in the post-Soviet era. This historical analysis allows the author to highlight the challenges of direct democracy in Hungary, relating to the constitutional protection of fundamental rights related to the instruments of direct democracy and the regulation of the referendum, and then to analyse the case law of the Hungarian Constitutional Court on the various reforms in this area.
