Summary/Abstract: The paper is focused on changes of the “subculture” concept on a theoretical level, starting from the mid 70’ies Birmingham School (UK) till nowadays. Relevant works and ideas of anthropologists, ethnologists, and sociologists that had influence on academic research of subcultures are discussed. The empirical part of the paper analyses understanding of the concepts of “subculture” and “subculture member” within the Lithuanian non-formal punk subculture.
