Idealization and devaluation of Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish national hero, in the creation of political reality

Summary/Abstract: Th is study presents how political entities of various provenance, with the help of a historical fi gure and re-lated events, tried to shape political reality through the instrumental use of the model of the Polish nationalhero Tadeusz Kościuszko for political activities and implementation of various political goals. Th e chrono-logical reconstruction of the process of idealization and devaluation of Tadeusz Kościuszko illustrates thedurability of the forms of celebration and, at the same time, the interpretative capacity of this national heroover the centuries. It also confi rms the durability of the cult of the national hero and reformer.
