Summary/Abstract: The article pays tribute to an outstanding ethnographer Anna Pavlovna Kosmenko (born 1944) who made a significant contribution to the study of the folk art of Russia’s Finno-Ugric peoples. Her research was based on long-term field expeditions and a thorough analysis of museum collections, which served as the foundation for her fundamental works on the ornamental art of the Karelians, Veps, and Sami of the Kola Peninsula. The article uncovers lesser-known aspects of Kosmenko’s personal and professional life, drawing on publications about her, archival materials, interviews with her colleagues and relatives, and photographs from her personal archive. Particular attention is given to Kosmenko’s research methodology and the untapped potential of her fieldwork materials, which are preserved in archives. The article underscores the importance of her scholarly legacy for contemporary ethnologists, local historians, and artisans.
