Summary/Abstract: In the 21st century, emojis and smileys have developed as a form of digital communication that can be found virtually everywhere, in all environment that involve written communication on an electronic device. They play a major role in enhancing interpersonal interaction on all platforms that one can refer to as text-based. This article explores the development of emojis and smileys and their impact on all aspects of digital conversations. This paper aims to provide a glimpse into the way these visual symbols have reshaped the way humans communicate in the digital age. This will be achieved by analyzing their function as non-verbal cues and examining their influence on communication styles, emotional expression, and social relationships. Moreover, the paper tries to identify the challenges and opportunities incurred with the use of emojis and smileys, especially when we refer to ambiguity, cultural interpretation, and the potential for miscommunication.
