Summary/Abstract: In this paper, starting from an Areopagitic fragment, I will try to point out some differences between the modern and the ancient and medieval paradigms of subjectivity. The Cartesian-origined perspective conceives the subject as an ultimate ego and, in a certain sense, self-sufficient, while the older perspective envisages a composite, structured subjectivity resultant of multiple forces and relations. The two conceptions (are) reflected (in) the social order of their era. Currently, we can see a return to the old paradigm in the sense of an understanding the human self as being somewhat composed, versatile and relational, not reducible to a single entity. The thesis I advance in this text is that the ecstatic disposition is culturally conditioned by the conception of the self under the concept of “multiple.”
