Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the phraseology of the D. Mihailović’s novel When pumpkins blossomed, that was often ranked at the very top of Serbian prose in the second half of the twentieth century. The types of constructions, the semantic fields of these phraseologisms, as well as their stylistic value in the novel are considered. As the analysis shows, the idiomatic layer of Mihailović’s story is an important component in shaping the unforced and lively speech of the heroes – on the structural-stylistic level, he is one of the important exponents of stylistic contextualization, translocation and transcodification. Mihailović’s interventions in the phrase system show a kind of nuance of expressions of the stylistically suspensive type (euphemism for dysphemism), on the one hand, and promotional (hyperbole and anticipation), on the other hand. Also, on the macro level, there is an idiomatic thickening around the focal points in the narrative (introduction – commitment to boxing – conflict with the Apash), which has its special function – emphasizing the emotional-subjective layer of the text, which certainly includes other linguistic factors, not only phraseological.
