Summary/Abstract: This work aims to investigate some of the multiple facets of suffering, identified by Emil Cioran within the framework of existence, but also the ways in which the philosopher relates to this suffering. Being a paradoxical philosopher, he is difficult to pin down in a particular school of thought, or in a well-defined philosophical line. Cioran is disconcerting. Anyone who goes through this philosophy will find themselves, unconsciously, on “quicksand”, and the beliefs they had until then will be seriously shaken, if not shattered for good. In this sense, sometimes Cioran has an attitude of piety, and other times he has iconoclastic, destructive statements regarding the origins of existential suffering, but also regarding the perspectives that induce these sufferings, all being, in fact, a manifesto of a skeptic in love with the absurd, resembling, perhaps, the deceptions of a reprobate priest. The conclusion of this paper will try to capture, with an extremely relative accuracy, if, in approaching the phenomena of existence, producing suffering, Cioran is an iconoclast in order to be able to face suffering, or is an iconoclast because he detests sacredness in all its forms.
