Summary/Abstract: Through analysis of 123 photos, from the photo-archive of the Museum of History in Smolian, are traced the changes in the traditional female dress in the villages of the central part of the Rodopi mountain (Ustovo, Raikovo, Smolian, Chokmanovo, Arda, Chepelare and others), throughout the first decades of the 20th century. The photo material gives the opportunity for comment of festival and ritual (mainly wedding) costumes of Christian women from the named villages with different age and social status. The changes in the costume refer to the introduction of factory fabric in combination with the traditional cuts and decorations of the dress, the substitution of separate elements of the costume with factory materials and the next step – the change of the cut of the upper dress, but preservation of the uniform costume for the village and the micro-region. The changes in the Central Rodopi take place later, in comparison with other Bulgarian territories, which is due to the nature-geographical factor and the specific historic and social development in this region. They are connected with the economic development of the separate villages, and influenced by closer and further trade centers that the local population communicates with.
