Summary/Abstract: The International Labour Organization (ILO) is one of the oldest international organizations. With its activities, and primarily its normative activities, it has contributed to the development of labour and social law and its breakthrough from the narrow national frameworks, as well as to raising global labour law standards. Establishing this organization crowned the efforts of many workers, trade unionists, employers and scientists aimed at an organization which would seek to create, improve and refine labour and labour conditions between States, but also encourage dialogue and solve problems between social partners, i.e. workers, employers and governments. The ILO is the first specialized agency of the United Nations. The ILO formulates international labour standards in the form of conventions and recommendations which lay down the minimum labour law standards: freedom of association, the right to organize, collective bargaining, elimination of forced labour, equality of opportunity and treatment, and other standards regulating the conditions applicable to a whole range of labour-related issues. It provides technical assistance in the following areas: vocational training and vocational rehabilitation; employment policy; labour administration; labour law and industrial relations; development of management; cooperatives; social security; labour statistics, and security and occupational safety. The ILO promotes the development of independent employers’ and workers’ organizations and provides them with training and advisory services. Within the United Nations system the tripartite structure of the ILO makes it unique in that workers and employers participate in the activities of the administrative bodies of the organization as equal partners of the governments.
