Summary/Abstract: The article undertakes the subject of literary characters who are aware of their own fictionality that are defined by the term "metafictional character". The term combines two meanings of metafiction. One is related to metafictional literature (as described by Patricia Waugh) and the other one refers to the relation between a character and fiction in perspective of epistemology, ontology and anthropology. The main part of the paper is devoted to the analysis of two novels by Teodor Parnicki: Muza dalekich podróży and Rozdwojony w sobie. Novels' construction, the motif of a novel within a novel, the concept of literary character and its relation to an empirical person and the author, are examined. The interpretation leads to the recognition of the consequences of construction of metafictional character for a revised concept of an authorial subject and the anthropological reflection, which means discovery of fictionality of subject, identity and reality.
