Summary/Abstract: The article is based on the assumption that the category of the figural tends to be used as an oppressive epistemic structure. Paving the way to the obvious, an image resists any questions and is an answer in itself. The author aims at the description of such a mechanism on the examples of Magdalena Tulli’s Dreams and Stones. Choosing typicality and reducing the story of the world to specific allegorical roles, socialist realism created a language for the description of its times, from which the period has liberated itself. Once created cliches block any access to knowledge, by presenting the moments of history in the dead light of allegory. Identity of the discourse, its images is substituted for reality, as well as for any attempt at narrating it. According to the author, Magdalena Tulli manages to deconstruct this process in her literary montage.
