Summary/Abstract: The article examines the most famous German expressionistic film and the critical accalim it got in Bulgaria by offering a view on a review of the film by Chavdar Moutafov – a key figure in Bulgar- ian modernism . The Cabinet of Dr . Caligari is the first and most important attempt of expressionism to enter the realm of cinema and an emblematic example of the synthesis between arts and the influence of European avantgarde . Chavdar Moutavov’s text is examined in the light of the ties of the writer and critic with expressionism and his contacts with Munich and cultural life in general in Germany after the first World War.The film’s analysis is made in the context of Moutafov’s aesthetic concept and his notions about the style and creative process of expression- ism. Special accent is placed on the essence of cinema as a media and the (im)possibility to com- bine the ideas of modernism with specifics of the cinematographic apparatus . The article states that Moutafov’s publication on the problem offers an original solution and greatly contributes to the study of the problem. In conclusion the article comments on the thesis about the ‘death’ pf expres- sionism and the manner in which it is present and is overcome in Moutafov’s article .
