Summary/Abstract: Everyday changes on a global scale and an increasingly fast pace of life are reflected in many aspects of human life, including the linguistic reality of modern languages. Consequently, various types of abbreviations have assumed a prominent role in these languages, allowing for a more economical expression of oral or written statements by condensing longer words or multi-word phrases. Word formation through abbreviation is becoming more common in most languages, including Croatian. However, Croatian language manuals do not give particular attention to this word formation process. The orthographic (spelling) norm determines the rules for abbreviating words, while their morphological and derivational categories belong to the grammatical norm. Therefore, the focus of the paper will be on investigating how this issue is addressed in Croatian language manuals in order to examine the role of acronyms as derivational bases in forming noun, adjective, and verb suffix derivatives as found in online corpora (HJR and Hrwac). Google will also be used to search for the examples as it is possible to find recent examples and evidence of their usage on the internet as well.
