War Discourse in the Media Between Journalism and Terminology

Summary/Abstract: The role of the media in the presentation and perception of reality especially comes out in crisis situations when exhaustive and regular information about current events is expected. The war in Ukraine, as well as military conflicts in other parts of the world, is an extralinguistic reality that is reflected in the media. The war discourse that arises in the language of the media becomes recognizable in the minds of citizens through frequent phrases that refer to war and military topics (e.g. razmjena vatre ‘exchange (of) fire’, strateški ciljevi ‘strategic targets’, paket vojne pomoći ‘military aid package’, humanitarna kriza ‘humanitarian crisis’). In addition to journalists, people from the military and social spheres are also involved in war reporting, which creates an image of an objective and professional presentation of the real situation in the media. Based on the analysis of the war content of Croatian newspaper portals (Jutarnji list, Večernji list, etc.) and TV news (HRT, RTL, Nova TV, N1), microlevel (intralinguistic) patterns of presenting the war in media reports are described, which include (1) the use of military terminology, (2) euphemization and hyperbolization as rhetorical devices, and (3) pragmatic strategies that influence recipients’ perception of the war and their trust in the media content.
