Summary/Abstract: The fall of communism in Romania marked a shift of paradigm in building and approaching the country’s cultural policy. The gradual opening of the post-communist society at all levels (institutional, representations, mentalities) is echoed in the translation policies, both as import and export of knowledge and cultural capital. This article aims at exploring, without trying to reach the exhaustivity of such a comprehensive topic, the setting of a coherent cultural policy in post-communist Romania, and its impact on the role(s) and functioning of translation within the publishing field. While filling in the gaps of the past and launching the new challenges of the open society (Karl Popper), translation in the post-communist society reveals a positioning towards the international exchange circuit of cultural and symbolic values.
