Biblical Mythemes in the Croatian Drama of the Twenties and Thirties in the Twentieth Century

Summary/Abstract: The author has chosen for her analysis a selection of Croatian dramatic texts written in the second and third decades of this century (1912-1924) whose common features are intertextual relations between biblical mythemes and the new dramatic structures. Nine titles have been singled out for the reinterpretation of the biblical mythemes. In these plays the sequences of biblical mythemes have been explicitly taken over and they are clearly recognizable. The consideration of the specificity of this relation can contribute to the clarification of some aspects of stylistic and historic changes in this period of Croatian literature. A shift between two literary formations can be traced in these plays - Modernism and Expressionism - and they are interesting for their overlapping and in relation to their stylistic boundaries, regardless of the poetics dominating in each individual text.
