Summary/Abstract: This article questions the behavior of the verb say in the incident sentences of Michel Houellebecq's novel, Map and territory. Through a contrastive analysis based on the method of Lucie Gournay (2013), this article aims to identify the occurrences of the verb say, semantic and pragmatic equivalents, as well as non-equivalences in their translation into Romanian. The conclusion is that Romanian keeps as much the structure of the statement in French as the semantic and pragmatic values of this verb, although there are situations where the Romanian translator chooses a verb that highlights the linguistic and narrative specificities of the Romanian language.
