Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the educational activities of representatives of the artistic and other related groups of intelligentsia in Baikal Siberia in the second half of the XIX — early XX century. The source basis for the article is materials from Irkutsk archival and museum collections. The author pays special attention to the history of the formation of museum and exhibition centers in Baikal Siberia and their place in educating the population. The inter action of artists in disseminating cultural knowledge with teachers, clergy and representatives of other intelligentsia groups is shown separately. Among the most active participants in this process, the author singles out the artist N. I. Verkhoturov and the teacher, historian and archivist, priest Ioann Drozdov. Thanks to the activities of these and other activists, the townspeople of Baikal Siberia had the opportunity to become acquainted with the achievements of world and domestic culture. Artists and creative people who supported them actively joined the movement for the preservation and study of artistic and architectural world and national heritage. Gradually, they drew other people into it, and began to use cultural achievements for educational and upbringing purposes. Over time, this process led to the formation of a mass movement for the protection of culture in all its diversity — from the preservation of archival documents and architectural objects to an increased interest in local history.
