Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the therapeutic model which has developed a systematic way for learning skills to control the smoking habit. CBT for quitting smoking is focused on changing maladaptive thoughts and beliefs that underlie excessive emotional reactions and behaviors during withdrawal. In situations when the stimulus is present or the level of nicotine in the body is decreased, the brain automatically sends a message to substitute nicotine which is reflected in the consciousness as the desire for a cigarette. Consumption of cigarettes satisfies the craving, increasing the feeling of satisfaction and enjoyment, which maintains motivational cycle of smoking. CBT works to increase control over the psychological processes associated with the maintenance of smoking: conditioning, reinforcement, attention to cues, mood, feelings, suggestion and imagery. Smoking cessation program uses a variety of cognitive-behavioral techniques: psychoeducation about smoking and quitting process, motivational lists, monitoring smoking, aversion therapy, techniques for changing thinking patterns, identification of triggers, imagination, distraction, rationalization, systematic sensitization, and progressive muscle relaxation. The program includes techniques for preventing relapses. CBT puts the smoker in charge of their own behaviour. It looks at the thinking that makes smoker continue with the habit, behavior - where and when it happens, and at the emotional aspects of smoking.
