Summary/Abstract: This article has two aims; first it provides a conceptual analysis of the main terms related to the contemporary revival of interest in the republican tradition such as respublica, classical republican tradition and modern republicanism. This conceptual framework can be used in the research on republicanism in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Rzeczpospolita) and neorepublicanism. The second aim of the article is to discuss in an introductory manner the sources and the foundation of the Polish republican tradition which goes back to the sixteenth century and brings exceptionally rich theoretical discourse inspired by the ideas of the classical republican tradition that were present in the political thought until the partition period.
